The Plant Phenotyping Network of Norway

PheNo will serve as Norway’s official node in EMPHASIS, a pan-European infrastructure set to launch in 2026.

This project brings together scientists, business companies, farmers, and developers to build a more sustainable future for Norwegian agriculture.

PheNo supports both research and education, from basic plant biology to applied work in agriculture, horticulture, and plant breeding. It’s a collaboration between leading universities and research institutes, built in close partnership with the agricultural and horticultural sectors.

PheNo is a cutting-edge infrastructure dedicated to plant phenotyping

Designed to support advanced research in plant biology, agriculture, and climate adaptation, this new facility will provide tools and technologies for high-throughput and precision phenotyping.

By enabling detailed observation and analysis of plant traits under various environmental conditions, our infrastructure promotes innovation and collaboration among researchers, breeders, farmers and industry partners.

Together, we aim to strengthen the sustainability of Norwegian agriculture to face internal and global challenges.

  • Outdoors in the field
  • Seeds and early development stages

Our services are designed for national users — with a focus on accessibility, flexibility, and gradual development.

By providing state-of-the-art facilities and data services, PheNo helps drive innovation and faster development of climate-resilient plant varieties and sustainable production systems.

Part of the European Network

PheNo is integrated into the European plant phenotyping community and will serve as Norway’s official node in EMPHASIS, a pan-European infrastructure set to launch in 2026.

This opens access to specialized European facilities for Norwegian researchers—and offers international scientists the chance to work with Norway’s unique growing conditions.

Participation in EMPHASIS also strengthens collaboration on method development and common data standards across Europe.
